The Narrative

Kalpeshwar Temple is the fifth and last temple in the sacred Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit of Uttarakhand. Situated amidst the serene Urgam Valley, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is unique among the Panch Kedars as it remains open throughout the year. At Kalpeshwar, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of his matted hairs or ‘Jataa’. The journey to this sacred shrine passes through dense forests, scenic mountain trails, and lush green terraced fields, offering both spiritual peace and natural beauty. Kalpeshwar is revered by devotees for its tranquil atmosphere and mythological significance connected to Lord Shiva. There is also an old Kalpvriksha tree here which is said to be the wish-granting tree in Hindu mythology. Kalpavriksha is a mulberry tree in Joshimath, which is believed to be the oldest tree in India. The tree is said to have divine properties and can grant the wishes of whoever prays at the tree. This tree also does not shed its leaves at any time of the year. It stays evergreen at all times. The tree is very famous as Adi Shankaracharya worshipped under this tree many centuries ago. Jyoteshwar Mahadev Temple is at the base of this Kalpavriksha tree.
