The Narrative

Nanda Devi National Park is one of the most famous and ecologically significant national parks in India, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand near Joshimath. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park forms an important part of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and is considered one of the world’s richest biodiversity regions. Established in 1982 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, the park is renowned for its untouched Himalayan wilderness, rare wildlife, alpine meadows, glaciers, deep river gorges, and towering snow-covered mountains. The park surrounds the majestic Nanda Devi Peak, which stands at 7,816 meters and is the second-highest mountain in India. The breathtaking landscapes of the park include dense forests of fir, birch, rhododendron, pine, and juniper along with colorful alpine flowers such as Brahma Kamal, blue poppy, and mayapple. Nanda Devi National Park is home to several rare and endangered Himalayan species including the snow leopard, Himalayan musk deer, Asiatic black bear, Himalayan brown bear, bharal, serow, and Himalayan tahr. The region also supports rich birdlife such as Himalayan monal, snow partridge, and golden eagle, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. The park’s remote and protected environment provides ideal conditions for scientific research and conservation activities. Adventure seekers and trekkers are attracted to the challenging trekking routes and mountaineering opportunities available in the region, although access to the core zone requires special permits. Nearby attractions associated with the biosphere region include the mysterious Roopkund Lake, also known as Skeleton Lake, famous for the discovery of hundreds of ancient human skeletons around its shores. Surrounded by glaciers, alpine meadows, and dramatic Himalayan landscapes, Nanda Devi National Park offers an unforgettable experience of natural beauty, adventure, and biodiversity. The park has also been featured in international documentaries including BBC’s Planet Earth and National Geographic productions due to its exceptional ecological importance and breathtaking scenery.
